Local Group Launches Plan

for Ferry Across Cayuga Lake

King Ferry, NY... A grass-roots organization known as The Cayuga-Seneca Lake Ferry Boat Initiative envisions a ferry service across Cayuga Lake and, later, Seneca Lake as important transportation links through the centers of Cayuga, Seneca and Yates counties. With Finger Lakes travel and tourism increasing every year, the group believes that visitors as well as area residents will be attracted to this alternative, more scenic route through Central New York.

The group invited a long-established ferry-service company to visit here for the purpose of consulting on feasibility, various potential landing sites, and costs. South Ferry, Inc. of Long Island, NY, confirmed the feasibility and has submitted a preliminary cost estimate. Several landing sites on the east and west shores of Cayuga Lake continue to be evaluated

The Cayuga Lake ferry, viewed as the first link in the formation of the new east-west travel route, will serve as the practical demonstration of a central connection between Cayuga and Seneca counties. The second link, a similar ferry across Seneca Lake, will complete the new route by adding a central connection between Seneca and Yates counties.

Cayuga and Seneca counties will be asked to assume leadership in forming a public-private partnership, and to work with local municipalities in the final determination of landing sites. Local government assistance will also be sought for overseeing installation of ferry-boat landing facilities in consultation with South Ferry and in cooperation with appropriate State and Federal agencies. At this time, it is hoped that a practical ferry route will closely, if not exactly, follow the original King's Ferry to Kidder's Landing run. The original ferry service operated for nearly 100 years until its closing in 1914.
